To avoid this, do not measure high on the brow where you think the hat should sit.
Measure well down on the brow, at the largest diameter of the head.
The hat will sit comfortably, slightly above the measurement spot.
Top Hats found their place in men;s fashion over an extensive period that started in the late 1700s. Even today, top hats (Toppers or Stovepipe Hats) are worn with morning wear and as livery for uniformed service positions such as doormen or coachmen.
Once worn by all social classes, top hats are now associated with formal or sophisticated business wear. Materials, size and shape have varied according to who and when they were worn. The extremely tall, straight sided versions are often called Stove pipe hats. Those with slightly convex sides and crowned top are known as Chimney pot hats, Mad Hatters, Carolers, Toppers, Squires and several other colloquialisms.
Top Hats in the 1800s were often made from felted beaver fur. Today’s hard felt hats are made of pure wool. The shape of this Caroler makes a strong crown that holds its shape and dispels water off its slightly curved surfaces. With a little care this hat can last for decades.
