Frock Coats stayed in fashion, with very little modification for almost an entire century, most of the 1800s, the Victorian and Edwardian eras. It became very popular in the old west as an adaptable semi-formal option that would accommodate horseback riding while still looking good at a dinner table. This coat pairs well with an assortment of tie styles, vests, or open collared shirts. The frock coat can be worn with top hat, derby, or Stetson hats as well as a variety of brimmed hats. For pants, use almost anything, jeans, slacks, riding pants, saddle pants, either belted or suspendered.
Frock Coats came in single and double-breasted styles. The single-breasted was most popular as Western wear, appropriate for business and social wear, evening or daytime. The knee-length frock coat is often associated with old west gamblers, bankers, merchants, and gunslingers. Western movies often showed the black-hat villains with their frock coat tail tucked behind their holster when ready to engage in a gunfight.
